History
The history
Can Ribas is an old textile factory built by Vicente Juan Ribas in 1860 in Establiments, Palma de Mallorca. The building was part of Vicenç Juan Rosselló's manufacturing emporium, which came to have several factories and 700 employees. Around 70 people worked in the Establiments factory, almost all of them women.
Vicente Juan Ribas (1810-1882) was born in Valledemosa. The second of six brothers, at the age of 16 he went to Palma to work as a baker.
During his work as a delivery boy, he frequently passed by Olmos Street, where the master craftsmen were located. He was fascinated by the textile machines of Master Ribas and decided to ask him for a job. He trained with him and married his first-born daughter, turning what was an artisan loom into the most important industrial textile group of the time.
Vicente Juan Ribas was a point of reference for his peers for his innovation in machinery, dyes and samples. Thanks to this and to his honesty, ingenuity and philanthropy, he was proclaimed "Hijo llustre de Mallorca" (illustrious son of Mallorca) by the City Council of Palma on 31st December 1905.

Establiments
Establiments is a residential area located in the North of Palma de Mallorca. It is a very well-looked upon, high-in-demand area due to its proximity to the city centre whilst also offering easy access to all amenities of daily life and green, tranquil surroundings. The area is mainly made up of highly residential zones, home to beautiful country estates and charming fincas. The district borders the municipalities of Esporles and Puigpunent to the north and west, respectively, and the districts of Son Anglada and Secar de la Real to the south and the suburb of Son Espanyol to the east.Establiments dates back to the 16th century, although the territory of the current neighbourhood was occupied much earlier. Prehistoric remains can be found in the nearby Son Bauçà and Ca'n Mallol caves and during the period when much of Spain was under Muslim rule, from the 700s-1400s AD, agriculture developed in the area. Once an independent municipality, Establiments became part of Palma in 1910.
