Summary

THE HISTORY

After the realisation that the sea air and the salt water of the sea have a healing effect and are beneficial to health became widespread in England in the 18th century, the first seaside resorts flourished in the south-east of England. Through Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, the physicist, naturalist, mathematician and writer, knowledge of the therapeutic value of seaside bathing also reached Germany. The English travel writer Thomas Nuget visited the "Heiligendamm" in 1766 at the invitation of the University of Rostock and was enthusiastic about the location. The final impetus for its realisation came from the physician Prof. Dr. Samuel Vogel at the end of the 18th century. He recommended to his sovereign, the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, that seaside resorts be built on the coasts of the Baltic and North Seas and is considered the father of the German seaside resort. The first German seaside resort was founded in 1793 in the bay at Heiligen Damm near Dobberan. It has been allowed to call itself Bad Doberan since 1921 and has been a spa since 2000.

THE ARCHITECTURE

At the western tip of the romantic Park and situated directly on the steep bank to the sea, the Cottage, built in 1841, enchants its viewers from the beach and from the sea. The landscape integration - leaning against the edge of the forest at the back and with a view of the boundless sea at the front - is what makes the cottage so enchanting. The architect and court architect Georg Adolph Demmler, a pupil of Schinkel and Schadow, was influenced by the then contemporary developments of English garden design, early Victorian architecture and the style of Tuscan country villas in his alterations, extensions and new buildings. In 1911, the cottage was extended and enlarged by the Schwerin court architect Emil Liß. The extension work reflected the upscale living and representational needs of the grand ducal family of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, moved in the original formal language of the court architect Demmler and was supplemented with elements that were modern at the time. All work carried out on the cottage was always carried out under the premise of the greatest care, the greatest attention to detail and compliance with the preservation order.

THE LOCATION

The spa town of Heiligendamm, Germany's first seaside resort, is famous as "the white town by the sea" and "the string of pearls" thanks to its exceptionally beautiful location directly on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg. The extremely harmonious ensemble with its interplay of architecture and nature is a true and almost legendary synthesis of the arts. Since the 18th century, the nobility and later also the upper middle classes have resorted to the incomparable surroundings. Heiligendamm is a district of the district town of Bad Doberan, which developed around the Gothic minster as early as the 13th century. The well-preserved old town with its many historical buildings is also an attraction in the region. Lively hustle and bustle can be enjoyed here, as well as in neighbouring Kühlungsborn. Supermarkets, schools and all shops and services for daily needs are offered here. The historic Bäderbahn Molli provides connections between the different parts of the town several times a day.
