Originally built in the late mid to late 1700’s the property was host to the 7th Earl of Elgin who used the property as the original display for the Parthenon Marbles, before they transferred to the British Museum. Other noted residents included Prince William Frederick and Prince George, Duke of Cambridge. Following the Duke’s death, the property was entirely redesigned as apartments in 1906 by the architects, Collcutt and Hamp who also worked on the Savoy Hotel and Lloyds Registry in the City of London.
Designed and built in white stone, blended with green ceramic brick trim in Flemish Baroque style, the facade summit is adorned by a segmental pediment, featuring a classical greco relief sculpture, itself crowned by an ornamental obelisk-finial.
The building was designated as Grade II listed by historic England in 1969.
